Effectiveness Indicator Workshops

The one-day workshops below are designed to capture a set of Effectiveness Indicators used in the On-Site School Review process.  Each workshop delves deeply into the research, allows the participants to become fully familiar with the rubrics and tools used in an On-Site School Review and culminates with an opportunity to practice the benchmarking process through case studies using data collected from on-site school visits.

The Essential Components of High Performance
In this interactive workshop we will uncover the research supporting curriculum, instruction and assessment.  The big idea is coherence. In a coherent instructional program, all parts are aligned and working together toward the same goal: meeting the standards. The written curriculum lays out the specifics of the instructional program. It describes the assessments to be used and the program of intervention and enrichment opportunities that are keyed to the results of those assessments. To maintain coherence, leaders and peers work together to ensure that the written curriculum is the one that is taught in every classroom. Teacher teams develop pacing charts to guide instructional organization and delivery so that important concepts and content are not skipped.  A well rounded assessment program includes formative, summative and diagnostic assessment.

When Leaders are Focused on Student Learning, Student Achievement Soars
In this interactive workshop we will bring together the research supporting school leadership and professional development.  Instructional programs need the support of strong leadership in order to thrive and to withstand challenges from competing school demands and priorities. This support is so important that researchers have found that leadership is second only to classroom instruction among all school-related factors that contribute to what students learn at school.  Effective leaders create a school climate in which academic achievement is the primary goal, and they ensure that policies, procedures, and resources support that goal.  Professional development is critical in ensuring up-to-date and effective teachers. To be most effective, teachers need to have expertise in four domains: 1) The subject matter they teach; 2) Understanding of how children learn (general pedagogy); 3) Understanding  the instructional, assessment, and inter­vention practices associated with the specific subjects taught (content-specific pedagogy); and 4) The skill and ability to form positive relationships with their students.

Creating a Student-Centered School
In this interactive workshop we will take a look at the research supporting student connectedness, engagement and readiness and school environment. Feeling a connection to their school, their peers, and the adults within their school provides an important safety net for students. Students who feel connected are much more likely to stay in school despite obstacles they may face along the way. When students begin to falter, there are mechanisms in place to quickly reach out to them with targeted assistance. Students move seamlessly from one school to another in the district because there is a high level of communication and coordination between schools. In addition to emphasizing a strong and aligned instructional program and encouraging teachers and leaders to have high expectations of their students, effective schools create a healthy learning environment by protecting instructional time from disruptions, including those resulting from negative student behaviors. Effective discipline systems have two major goals: to create and maintain an environment that is consistently conducive to learning, and to ensure the safety of students and staff. Behavior systems that support these goals and are supported by students, families, and school staff members are seen as fair, consistent, equitably applied, and having consequences commensurate with infractions.

Reaching Out to Parents and the Community
In this interactive workshop, we will reveal the research supporting family and community involvement.  In effective schools, there are programs in place to engage families and the community in supporting student learning.  Family and community members can be and are important partners in student success. High-functioning family involvement programs build trust and positive relationships between parents and the school. Because children learn from observing, they learn from positive encounters between school staff members and families, just as they learn from negative encounters. When children see their parents and school staff members interacting respectfully, they learn that school matters and that parents and teachers are working together toward their success.  It is important for schools to reach out to families and the community in an effort to establish a culture of shared ownership of the school.

Planning for Success
In this interactive workshop we will take a look at the research supporting strategic planning and district support.  Educators have sometimes been accused of random acts of improvement. Strategic planning ensures that actions are aligned with other initiatives at the school and work together toward a common goal. It begins when school administrators and others use data to identify and understand a problem that is interfering with student learning, propose a solution, work toward it, and use data again to evaluate progress toward the solution. While schools are most frequently the primary unit at which improvement efforts are aimed, rarely do they operate independently of a school district and board. In high-performing districts, the roles and responsibilities at each level (student, teacher, building administrator, district administrator, superintendent, and board) are clear, each level acts within its scope of authority and each level is accountable to the others for its performance. Effective districts maintain a relentless focus on student learning. They have clear expectations for adults, students, and the instructional program and ensure schools remain focused on improved outcomes for students.
